A new report from the Ohio Immigrant Alliance finds that the detention of Haitian-Americans in Ohio is up 142% at four immigration jails since the end of Temporary Protected Status. Prior to August, Haitian women comprised 2% of the female population incarcerated for ICE in these jails; in August, they made up 39%.

On Friday, September 4, DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin held a press conference filled with lies, performative outrage, and multiple mistakes about immigration law.

“It was almost like a backwards version of two truths and a lie,” said Lynn Tramonte, Executive Director of the Ohio Immigrant Alliance. “But it was more like multiple lies and one truth — his name. When a government official lies constantly, the media can’t simply report what he says. Journalism has to function as the watchdog of the public interest, and correct every misstatement he makes.”

The Ohio Immigrant Alliance released “They Walk Among Us: A List of 59 Sexually and Physically Abusive ICE and Border Agents,” an analysis of sexual and violent crimes committed by ICE and Border Patrol agents who primarily preyed upon women and children.

The report documents 59 cases of violent and/or sexual criminal acts by DHS employees, primarily carried out against women and children. It puts the criminal behavior of these agents in context with the agencies’ cultures, as well as recent policy changes that bode dangerously for public safety. DHS has further loosened agent vetting, hiring, and training standards, eliminated accountability, and expanded the types of dangerous tactics agents are authorized to use in the enforcement of civil immigration laws. 

Today, the Ohio Immigrant Alliance released its latest data-driven report that shows the Trump administration is lying about who it is arresting, detaining, and deporting.

“Counting Errors, Missing Denominators, and Misplaced Arrests: An Ohio Case Study of the White House ‘Alien Arrest’ Tracker” compares White House data to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) data, revealing startling discrepancies that show the White House site cannot be trusted. 

We have two big announcements at the Ohio Immigrant Alliance! First, we are suing the Butler County Jail, for a second time.

Second, we just released “Ohio Immigration and Customs Enforcement Activity Report (January 2025 - March 2026),” the only statewide analysis of immigration detention in Ohio during the first fifteen months of the second Trump administration.

We found that nearly 8,000 people were detained for ICE in Ohio between January 2025 and March 2026. Fewer than 5 percent had been convicted of a violent offense.

According to “Ohio Immigration and Customs Enforcement Activity Report (January 2025 - March 2026),” ICE detention capacity in Ohio soared more than 1,000 percent during the first months of President Trump's second term. The number of ICE contracted jails in Ohio grew from two at the end of 2024 to six by the end of 2025. The statewide average daily detained population rose from 117 in 2024 to roughly 656 in 2025.

It does more than diagnose problems and document pain. It advances solutions; improvements to today’s immigration system like guaranteed legal representation for people with cases in civil immigration court; a truly independent immigration judiciary, rather than one fully controlled by the Executive Branch; and an end to immigration jail.

Anticipating major changes in immigration policy during the second Trump administration, Ohio Immigrant Alliance started the Ohio Immigrant Hotline in January 2025. We knew this resource was needed due to our experiences during the first Trump presidency, when helping each other deal with stressful immigration situations was vital. The Hotline is part of our “Build The Nest” strategy and the OhioIsHome.org resource website. 

On March 25, OIA released a report about the Hotline’s first year of existence, using Hotline operations data, called “Connecting Ohio: The Ohio Immigrant Hotline’s First Year in Action.”
