Dear Mr. President and Secretary Mayorkas:

We share your commitment to human rights and human dignity at home and abroad. Sadly, in their home country, Black Mauritanians are frequently subjected to unaccountable police violence, slavery, human trafficking, genocide, restrictions on free speech and association, discrimination in education and access to citizenship and identity documents, and racism and repression in all aspects of civic life.

In light of this, we ask that you immediately designate Temporary Protected Status (TPS) and/or Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) for Mauritanian nationals in the United States, including those rendered stateless by their country of birth.

Designating Mauritania for TPS and/or DED would send a powerful message that the United States is back in the business of humanitarian protection.
