The Columbus Dispatch reports that the Morrow County Jail plans to start accepting new inmates, including ICE detainees, on June 17. This is unacceptable! The jail has failed to address the problems that turned it into a 100% COVID hotspot in the first place. Public health is at risk if this jail continues to operate. Call the Morrow County Commissioners TODAY and tell them to #CloseMorrowJail!

My name is ___________________ and I am calling to advocate for the closure of the Morrow County Correctional Facility due to widespread mismanagement resulting in mass illness and death. Morrow County Correctional Facility became the first county jail and ICE detention facility to be 100% COVID positive. Sheriff John L. Hinton has demonstrated an inability to uphold the “minimum standards for jails in Ohio” as determined by the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction. Jail staff have failed to follow agreed upon infection control protocols, and inmates and detainees have been denied adequate medical assistance and treatment. Southern District Judge Sarah D. Morrison noted the “reckless, out-of-control spread of infection is constitutionally unacceptable” and recently ordered the release of more than a dozen men. If a dangerous environment provoked the release of a dozen detainees, why should anyone else be held inside such a poorly-maintained facility? Ohio’s Department of Rehabilitation and Correction claims it “promotes safe, secure, and humane jails.” Clearly the Morrow County Correctional Facility is none of these, and that’s why I am calling for its permanent closure.
